Cloudflare has launched a beta Web Search API through its AI Gateway, giving AI applications access to live web data like breaking news, updated documentation, and code changes. It feeds these real-time search results directly to language models to keep their responses current and accurate.
Developers can access the tool via standard REST APIs or directly inside Cloudflare Workers. Because it runs through AI Gateway, you get built-in request logging, access management, and central billing alongside your usual AI model calls. You can also bring your own provider keys.
Key features include:
-
Multiple Search Providers: Pulls live results using Ceramic.ai, Exa, or Linkup through a single interface.
-
Transparent Pricing & Privacy: Search is offered at the providers’ list prices with zero markup. Cloudflare highlights partners that support Zero Data Retention (ZDR) to protect privacy.
-
Web Crawling Standards: All partner search engines must follow verified-bot rules and return direct source links with their results.
Cloudflare plans to build search tools natively into AI Gateway down the road, but developers can start using it right away through Cloudflare Workers.
